Sugar Addiction
Your Body: Sugar grabs onto our human body and just doesn’t want to let go. A sugar addiction can be recognized by you as a need or craving. We usually listen to it, don't we? Remember that candy bar or soda pop you had yesterday? The body gets programmed to expect sweet in the diet every few hours. I think one of the times of day, that a lot of people are craving sugar is after the evening meal. Is that when your sugar addiction kicks in?
The blood sugar rises quickly to a high level after a refined carbohydrate is eaten. A sense of satisfaction happens – as though a large meal had been eaten – only to be replaced in a few hours with an empty feeling and hunger – sweet craving – when the blood sugar drops from high levels to lower levels. It takes 8 hours for your body to metabolize 1 tbsp. sugar. Overweight Begins As this cycle continues, fat cells become overloaded with fat that is trapped and unable to be metabolized. Water may be retained. Overweight and sluggish physical activity occur. Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency: When sugar replaces vital nutrients in food, the result is vitamin and mineral deficiency. For example, a zinc deficiency may occur, which may be associated with altered taste sensation. Frequently, someone with a zinc deficiency loses his ability to appreciate the taste of food. He may eat foods containing enormous quantities of sugar or salt and not recognize the quantity he is eating.
Sugar Cravings Also Called Sugar Addiction
Today’s population craves sweet coated cereals, salted potato chips, highly spiced foods, and sweet soft drinks. Having a ‘sweet tooth’ is a habit easily learned but very difficult to undo. A sugar addiction is as difficult to leave behind as cigarette or alcohol addiction. Obesity: Overweight can be due to obesity – that is, an increase in the number or size of the fat cells in the body – or it can be due to excessive retention of fluid in the body. It is commonly due to both. Obesity is characterized by a decreased responsiveness to insulin. That is when it is said, you are insulin resistant. Insulin stimulates the synthesis of fat in the body.Refined carbohydrates in the diet, especially sugar, is involved in the typical American problem of overweight. Candida: A diet rich in sugar and other simple carbohydrates literally feeds yeast and promotes overgrowth, creating an overabundance of Candida. Diabetes: Obesity is one of the principal factors responsible for the onset of diabetes in the adult. Hyperactive Children Have a Sugar Addiction: Most hyperactive children are consuming diets high in refined carbohydrates in which sugar and various chemical additives are plentiful. Many hyperactive children are eating all the time. There are many reasons for this. The processed food that the children are consuming lack proper nutrition. The body needs an adequate supply of vitamins, enzymes, minerals and more. If their bodies are not getting this, the kids may just continue to eat in order to get what their bodies need. The children may be driven to eat by the homeostatic (balance) disruption that occurs when a high-sugar intake results in wide swings of blood sugar from high to low. The lows are usually more dominant. Smoking Cigarettes: An interesting fact that I didn’t know is next to the food processing industry, the tobacco industry is the biggest sugar customer in our country. Taken from William Dufty’s book, Sugar Blues. An average of 5% sugar is added to cigarettes, up to 20% in cigars and as much as 40% in pipe tobacco. Sweet Taste in Toothpaste: There is even a sweet taste in our baby food and our tooth paste. As children, most of us, were rewarded for our good marks at school and our good behavior with some kind of sweet. Today, the little ones are taken out for a donut and juice, while Mom or Dad have their coffee. Sweeteners: A lot of us use sweeteners in our tea, coffee or diet pop. Even though we have probably made a healthier choice in some respects, basically, any kind of sweetener keeps that sweet need going. Aspartame has been found to increase the risk of cancers like Lymphoma and Leukemia at quantities equivalent to 4-5 servings of diet soda in a 150 pound person. There have been ongoing studies happening about aspartame and disagreements between the FDA and the company that did tests. You can read more about this in Dr. Hugo Rodier's book called Sweet Death.
