What is Gout Gout can be extreme foot pain when it affects the metatarsal phalangeal joint area at the base of the big toe. This is the most commonly affected area. It can be a recurring attack and appear as a red, tender, swollen and feeling very hot joint around the big toe.
Causes of Gout It is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood which crystallize and are deposited in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. These crystals cause severe foot pain. Diet accounts for about 12% of gout. This includes the consumption of alcohol, fructose sweetened drinks, meat and seafood. Other triggers include physical trauma and surgery. Recent studies have found dietary factors once believed to be associated are, in fact, questionable including the intake of purine-rich vegetables and total protein. This foot pain is caused by too much uric acid in the bloodstream. This can cause extreme foot pain in all affected areas. The cartilage between the joints and the tendon areas becomes inflamed as well. Characteristic crystals in the joint fluid determines gout.When the white blood cells rush to the inflamed area to help heal the uric acid, heat is produced.
